Since I got the text from Adrian a few days ago summing up his conversation with Karrigan, my hand has been finding this velvet box in my pocket more and more often. Knowing that it might soon have a finger to rest on makes it almost impossible to ignore its existence at any part of the day.

At this point, it’s definitely a vice, an addiction that I know I’m going to have to fight to get over once she either turns me down or says yes. Maybe I’ll just have to keep the box in my pocket, so I have its familiar weight everywhere I go if I’m feeling a little anxious.

Our new office building is looking great, everybody that we’ve hired pulling through to hustle and get it set up. I wanted to make sure it was comfortable since it’s going to be our new headquarters, and it’s sort of strange to be working in the same building as my son. He’s been with the company for awhile, but our interactions at work have always been through e-mail or an occasional phone call.

To say our relationship is strained is an understatement. It’s not that I abandoned him, or was a shitty dad, it’s more along the lines of his mom sort of poisoned him against me, poisoned him, and he’s never really given me the benefit of the doubt.

We had him way too young and had no idea what we were doing in the beginning, and as he got older and we broke up, my ex pretty much decided she didn’t need me to do anything.

I fought for my rights, so I was still able to see him and everything, but the more his mind developed, the more he bought into the lies his mom told about me. That broke my heart because he’s my kid.

Now that he’s an adult though, I really can’t make any excuses for him. I’m trying to accept that he just doesn’t like me that much, even though I feel like that opinion was built on things that have no basis in reality. The only thing I have to comfort myself with at the end of the day, is knowing that I’m a good person whether he agrees or not.

I’m not going to lie, the decision to move our headquarters here had a lot to do with the fact that my son lives here. Now as I get older, I realize how much we’ve lost, how much I want to build with him. I’m taking him out to lunch today, to see if maybe we can start over somehow. If he’ll let me.

When I walk into his office to get him, he’s not the upbeat guy I’m used to seeing. He's sort of mopey, hunched over and playing with something small on his desk. Just so that I don’t feel like I’m intruding on something private, I give an exaggerated knock on his open door and announce myself.

“Oh, hey. Is it that time already?”

“Yeah. Everything alright?”

“Not really.
